Exporting Water: Almonds, Cattle, and California Agriculture in the Era of Climate Cataclysm

There is much talk about carbon footprints of human activity but we must also think about the water footprint. For example, a pound of almonds requires 900 gallons of water- and 80% of the world's almonds are grown in California. California, like the rest of the US west, is in the most serious sustained drought in 12 centuries. The state produces the bulk of the fruits and vegetables we consume in the US., What is the historical and future trajectory of California agriculture?
